Energy Saving Tips

  • Change all light bulbs to energy saving light bulbs. They last longer and use 20% of the power.
  • Fit an insulating jacket to your hot water cylinder. Buy a British Standard jacket that’s at least 7.5cm thick.
  • Insulate hot water pipes, especially the ones between the boiler and hot water cylinder.
  • If your boiler is over 15 years old, it's a good idea to fit an energy efficient condensing boiler.
  • Turn off all lights when not needed.
  • Don’t leave the TV and other appliances on standby.
  • Never leave hot taps running – its money down the drain.
  • Turn your thermostat down by one degree.
  • Don’t overfill your kettle; heat only the amount of water you need.
  • Take regular short showers instead of baths – you’ll use 60% less water.
  • Use your toaster, not the grill for toast.
  • Wash your laundry @ 30°C.
  • Install Renewable Energy measures.
  • 10% heat is lost through draughty windows, draught proofing will help keep heat in.
  • Nearly half of heat could be lost through uninsulated cavity walls, two thirds of it can be saved with cavity wall insulation.
  • 26% heat is lost through the roof, loft insulation keeps the heat in and can save up to 20% on your fuel bills.
